NTT INDYCAR Qualifying Report - Detroit Grand Prix

Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix
Detroit, Michigan

Streets of Detroit
The 1.645-mile, nine-turn layout that makes up the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix circuit is among the smallest street venues that the NTT INDYCAR SERIES visits each season. This places extra incentive on qualifying and maintaining track position as passing options are at a premium on the downtown, riverfront circuit.
After a one-hour practice session on Saturday morning, Team Penske got down to business when it came time to set the field for Sunday's race. Each of the three drivers finished with top-10 speeds in the morning practice and followed it up with similar runs in qualifying, led by Josef Newgarden. The two-time and reigning Indianapolis 500 champion posted a lap of 1:00.9607 seconds in the No. 2 Astemo Chevrolet and will start the race from inside the second row in the third position. Just behind in the No. 3 Gallagher Chevrolet sits Scott McLaughlin who will roll off from the fourth position tomorrow. Will Power continues his consistent start to the season by qualifying eighth in the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet.

NEWS OF THE DAY: Team Penske used Saturday to break some important news, specifically as it relates to the No. 2 Chevrolet team. In the morning it was announced that Hitachi Astemo would continue as an important partner across all three teams with primary paint schemes continuing on the No. 2 Chevrolet. Later in the day, the motorsports world found out that 2023 and 2024 Indianapolis 500 champion, Josef Newgarden, had agreed to a multi-year contract with the team in which he has won 27 races, two series titles and his two Indy 500 crowns.
THEY SAID IT: "Driving for Roger Penske and this iconic team is a dream that I never thought I would realize. I'm thankful for the opportunities that I've been given during my time at Team Penske. I have a great amount of respect for the individuals that comprise our group, including the partners who support us. Our time together has been filled with hard work, teamwork and dedication; and I'm so excited that we will continue on for many more years to come. I'm sure that we can achieve much more in the future. I still believe we haven't reached our full potential together just yet."
