NTT INDYCAR SERIES Qualifying Report Sonsio Grand Prix
May 10, 2024
Sonsio Grand Prix
Speedway, Indiana - May 10, 2024
The month of May is now upon the drivers and teams of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES (NICS) and with it comes two-and-a-half weeks of action at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). First up is the Sonsio Grand Prix on the 2.439-mile road course throughout the IMS infield and part of the historic oval. In the 15 NICS run on the road course, Team Penske has amassed eight wins by three different drivers: Will Power, Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud.
The Sonsio Grand Prix weekend is one of the more condensed weekends on the schedule with two practice sessions and qualifying occurring on Friday before a Saturday race. Will Power and Scott McLaughlin logged top-10 times in both practice sessions with Josef Newgarden gradually working his way up to a top-10 time in the second session. As is the norm, qualifying was a tightly contested end to the Friday activities with McLaughlin barely missing the top 12. The most recent NICS winner will start tomorrow's race from the 13th position. Power and Newgarden, however, raced into the Firestone Fast Six to have a shot at the NTT P1 Award. After strong efforts it will be Power starting third with Newgarden right behind in fourth.
Coverage of the Sonsio Grand Prix begins tomorrow at 3:00 pm ET on NBC.

POWER HOUR: No driver in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES has enjoyed more success on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course than Will Power. The Australian-American driving ace has scored five wins in the 15 races contested on the circuit. Additionally, six of his series-record 70 pole positions have come at this venue.
THEY SAID IT: "We were super quick through all the rounds. Those tires, they just never came in. The first run that we were on, maybe I should have run a bit harder on my first lap. I looked after them, but they just never came up. Was sliding around a little bit. P3 is pretty good. Top-six in this series is very, very good. We'll see if we can get that Verizon Chevy car in Victory Lane. We're knocking on the door. I love being up there, love battling for pole. You don't win a race crashing. If you play it smart, like I race every time, I'm going to try and it together properly. I'm going to do everything to the best of my ability and hopefully, that brings a win."
