Team Notes: After a brief hiatus the stars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES descended on Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) Saturday morning for the first oval race weekend of the year. Team Penske – winners of 11 INDYCAR SERIES races at TMS – began the weekend with Scott McLaughlin sitting atop the speed charts in the morning practice session with a lap of 223.747 mph in the No. 3 XPEL Chevrolet. The 2022 winner of this event, Josef Newgarden, finished with a top-10 speed in the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet as former TMS winner, Will Power, slotted in 14th.
Following a brief break, the 28-car field lined up to qualify for Sunday’s 250-lap feature. Newgarden was out first for Team Penske and he kept the No. 2 Chevy on the front row until late in the session when he was shuffled down to the fourth starting position. McLaughlin, eager to back up his practice effort, had his run impacted by wind that resulted in him qualifying in the 15th position. The 2022 series champion, Will Power, was the final Team Penske driver to make a qualifying run and will start from the eighth position.
