September 8, 2021

"Penske Material" provides an inside look at some of the personalities, stories and moments that make Team Penske so unique.

As Team Penske fans are well aware, the team is one of the most successful organizations in the history of sports. Since 1966, Team Penske has scored at least one race victory in every discipline in which its competed, earning 40 national championships, 18 Indianapolis 500 victories, a pair of Daytona 500 triumphs and a Formula 1 win in 1976. Team Penske enters this weekend’s racing action with an incredible 597 wins in its rich 55-year history. With winning teams competing this weekend in the NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series and NTT INDYCAR SERIES races, the organization is excited for the opportunity to produce its 600th all-time victory.

To put Team Penske’s upcoming achievement into an overall sports perspective, the Green Bay Packers have played 1,444 games since 1921 with an all-time regular season and playoff win record of 805 victories. Only seven National Football League (NFL) teams have reached the 600 win plateau. In the 60-year history of the New England Patriots – the organization that has become the modern model for sustained success in sports – the team has produced 519 regular-season wins and 37 post-season triumphs for a total of 556 all-time victories.

With Team Penske on the cusp of 600 victories, race with us down memory lane to look back the organization’s numerous milestone wins, as we prepare for Team Penske’s next landmark achievement in sports history.

Team Penske captured its first victories in its debut season of 1966 when the team’s Corvettes won legendary endurance races at both Daytona and Sebring. The GT class victories laid the groundwork for what was to come as Roger Penske picked up where he left off as a driver, with his race team winning in its first two starts. Team Penske Hall of Famer Mark Donohue then earned his first wins for the team, as he produced a USRRC victory at Kent Pacific Raceway before securing the team’s first Can-Am Series triumph at MoSport.

In 1971, Donohue captured Team Penske’s first INDYCAR victory and Team Penske 47th overall win. Donohue won the Schaefer 500 at Pocono International Raceway driving the No. 66 Sunoco McLaren M16. Donohue also posted Team Penske’s first NASCAR Cup Series victory and the team’s 62nd overall win in 1973 when he took the checkered flag in the Winston Western 500 at Riverside International Raceway behind the wheel of the No. 16 AMC Matador.

As Team Penske built the most successful program in INDYCAR history, the team achieved special milestone wins with drivers Bobby Unser, Paul Tracy and Ryan Briscoe. Win 100 came on May 24, 1981 as Unser won the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Team Penske’s third Indy victory. Tracy had the honor of producing Team Penske’s 200th win when he drove to victory the Motorola 300 at Gateway International Raceway on May 25, 1997.  Briscoe posted Team Penske’s 135th INDYCAR triumph and the team’s 300 win overall when he drove to Victory Lane on June 1, 2008 at the Milwaukee Mile.

The 400th win milestone was reached by the team on September 6, 2014 when 2012 NASCAR Series champ Brad Keselowski won the the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway. A little more than four years later, Keselowski proudly scored Team Penske’s 500th all-time victory when he claimed the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on September 16, 2018. That victory allowed Keselowski to move into a tie with Donohue for the most wins with the Team Penske organization.

The most recent win for the team was produced by Ryan Blaney as he was responsible for win 597 with a dramatic victory at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, August 28.

With all three NASCAR Cup Series teams competing in the Playoffs, Austin Cindric looking to repeat as Xfinity Series champion and Team Penske searching for its 17th NTT INDYCAR SERIES title over the next few weeks to close out the season, it seems only fitting that the organization is pursuing its latest milestone at the most important time of the year.

Often referred to as the "New York Yankees of motorsports," Team Penske is poised to reach another level in sports achievement and one that reflects its longtime commitment to excellence and years of producing premier Penske Material – 600 all-time race victories.
