THE RACE REVIEW
Joey Logano overcame a pit road penalty on Sunday afternoon at Auto Club Speedway en route to scoring his fifth-straight top-10 finish to start the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Logano qualified the No. 22 Auto Club of Southern California in the 13th position and took right off toward the front of the field at the green flag. Logano raced almost all afternoon long inside the top-five, running as high as third over the first 150 laps of the event. On lap 154, Logano and the No. 22 team suffered a questionable pit road penalty for an uncontrolled tire in pit road, forcing him to start at the tail end of the field. Despite restarting 27th, Logano was able to race his way to 13th before a couple of final pit stops with less than 30 laps to go. Logano was able to race his way to seventh as the checkers flew, giving him his fifth-straight top-10 finish to start the 2015 season. With the finish, Logano also earned his 22nd-straight lead lap finish, dating back to last season, setting an all-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series record in the process.
WHAT THEY ARE SAYING
"We were OK today. We got ourselves up to third and it felt like we were pretty good. We were every bit as good as the 20 (Matt Kenseth) if we could ever get out front, but we just made a mistake on pit road. I don’t even know what happened yet, so I just know it was a tire violation of some sort, and we weren’t able to recover in time. We had a couple cautions to help us try to gain those spots back, but we just didn’t get back there in time. Congrats to Brad (Keselowski) on winning it though. That was a good call on Paul’s part to make that happen. It’s nice that we’re both in the Chase. We can both race aggressively now and obviously he raced aggressively anyway. It’s nice for both of us to have a win already."
