Porsche Penske Motorsport Weathers a Difficult Race at Laguna Seca
Porsche Penske Motorsport end their West Coast swing after disappointing results at the Monterey SportsCar Championship.
The race in Monterey, CA, under cooler and mixed weather than expected, turned into an exciting 2 hour and 40-minute nail biter. Strategy ruled the day in Sunday's Monterey SportsCar Championship, the fourth race weekend of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season before a dramatic last-lap pass concluded the final lap at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Thanks to a bold strategy, Porsche Penske Motorsport were briefly among the leaders with Felipe Nasr fielding the No. 7 Porsche 963. Unfortunately, he fell back into the midfield due to a late pit stop. Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor finished sixth at the wheel of car number 6, while the sister car driven by Nasr and Julien Andlauer came in seventh. Both of the Porsche 963's were racing in Apple Computer colors to mark 75 Years of Porsche Motorsport and Apple's 50th anniversary.
The No. 7 car with Nasr and Andlauer now sits in second in the championship team standings. Estre and Vanthoor in the No. 6 sister car hold third position.
The next round of the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is the Detroit Grand Prix on May 30.
Official championship points to follow once available.
No. 6 Car
START: 8TH
FINISH: 6TH
LAURENS VANTHOOR'S THOUGHTS: "It was clear to us before the race started that we probably wouldn't be able to compete for the win. We tried everything, but it wasn't enough to pull off a surprise. Under the circumstances, sixth place was the best we could manage."
No. 7 Car
START: 9TH
FINISH: 7TH
FELIPE NASR'S THOUGHTS: "Our competitors were stronger than us this time. We did what's required in situations like this: minimize the damage while maximizing our points total. In Detroit, we want to be back in the mix."
