JOSEF NEWGARDEN No. 2 SHELL FUEL REWARDS CHEVROLET
START: 23RD
FINISH: 28TH
RACE RUNDOWN: Josef Newgarden and the No. 2 Shell Fuel Rewards Chevrolet team finished 28th in Sunday's Indianapolis 500 after a strong run was halted prematurely by a hard crash on Lap 127 of the 200-lap event. A two-time winner of the race, Newgarden rolled off from the 23rd starting position, but he would not remain there long. When the first caution flag of the day flew on Lap 18, Newgarden had powered his way to the 16th position and picked up two more spots on the ensuing pit stop to restart 14th on Lap 28. He worked his way inside the top 10 following the second caution of the day and became a fixture inside the top five following the team's second pit stop on Lap 62. Rain began to become a nuisance as the second half of the race began with two race stoppages on Lap 101 and Lap 116. On the Lap 127 restart, Newgarden ran solidly in the fourth position when he placed his Chevy machine too low in Turn 4, resulting in a spin and heavy contact with the outside wall that put them out of the event.
NEWGARDEN'S THOUGHTS: "We were going for it. Obviously, we didn't know how the weather was going to affect the second half of the race. It looked like there could be heavy rain before the end of it and I wanted to put us in the best possible position no matter how it finished. The Shell Fuel Rewards Chevy was a work in progress for much of the first half, but it was starting to come to us. Just hate that we couldn't finish it off."
SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN No. 3 PENNZOIL CHEVROLET
START: 9TH
FINISH: 3RD
RACE RUNDOWN: Scott McLaughlin and the No. 3 Pennzoil Chevrolet rebounded from a disappointing 2025 Indianapolis 500 to deliver a strong and competitive performance, earning a third-place finish in Sunday's 110th running of the Indianapolis 500. In his sixth start in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," McLaughlin rolled off ninth in the legendary "Yellow Submarine" and steadily worked his way forward, reaching seventh by Lap 20 and gaining four positions on a well-executed pit stop with a slight air pressure adjustment. A timely caution helped move him into the top five by Lap 35, and he continued his charge to third by Lap 42, though a wing adjustment was needed to improve balance. Following a four-tire stop and adjustment on Lap 62, he reported slight understeer while running sixth and focused on extending the fuel window. McLaughlin surged into the lead on Lap 133, engaging in a back-and-forth battle with Alex Palou and Conor Daly, and remained a factor through additional stops on Laps 148 and 176 to address handling changes, including a loose condition. Varying strategies shuffled the No. 3 team toward the back half of the top 10 late in the race, but a late caution and red flag set up a one-lap shootout. Restarting 10th, McLaughlin charged through the field to secure an impressive third-place finish.
MCLAUGHLIN'S THOUGHTS: "It I don't think we were fast enough in traffic, to be honest, like the other two cars were (Rosenquist and Malukas). But, yes. I think the No. 12 car was the car of the race today, but the No. 60 made the strategy work, and we were 10th with four to go. I had two awesome late restarts. So I was just sending an hope and we came out with third."
DAVID MALUKAS No. 12 VERIZON CHEVROLET
START: 3RD
FINISH: 2ND
RACE RUNDOWN: David Malukas and the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet team were just yards away from winning the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday afternoon before Felix Rosenqvist nipped him at the line in the closest finish in the race's immense history. It is the second consecutive runner-up finish for Malukas at the Indianapolis 500 on a day when he led a total of 30 laps. Malukas began the day from the outside of the front row - the 50th front row start for Team Penske at Indianapolis - in the third position. A quick caution period on Lap 18 gave the Verizon crew an opportunity to bring their driver down pit lane for fresh tires, fuel and adjustments before restarting from the ninth position. With improved handling, Malukas carved his way through the field and into the third position by Lap 48. The 24-year-old took over the lead for the first time on Lap 110, just prior to a brief caution period for rain on Lap 116. Teammate Josef Newgarden's incident on Lap 127 brought in varying fuel strategies with Malukas pitting for the final time with 26 laps remaining. He returned to the track 22 seconds behind the race leaders, but the field was brought back together when a caution flew for the No. 4 Chevrolet with five laps remaining. On the restart, Malukas drove into the second position when the final caution flag was displayed, setting up a one lap dash to the checkered. After taking the lead into Turn 1 on the final lap, Malukas held the top spot through Turn 4 before Rosenqvist was able to get around his outside to nip him at the line.
MALUKAS' THOUGHTS: "I don't know what else we could have done. We were the fastest car that whole race. I gave it 150%. I almost crashed every lap and still end up with a P2. I can't believe it. I don't know what else I can give. We've had such a stellar season. This whole month they gave me everything I need. Just so close. This place, man. We're going to come back again, though. We're going to bring everything. We're going to give it 160%, though. Thank you, everybody, here, for staying here through the rain. Thank you to everybody at Verizon and Team Penske. Thank you to Roger Penske for believing in me when nobody else did. We're going to keep on going."
