The month of May activities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway began Friday morning with practice for Saturday's GMR Grand Prix on the famed circuit's road course. The race has served as a popular appetizer to the crown jewel of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES - the upcoming 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 - on Memorial Day weekend. Team Penske is an eight-time winner on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, with Will Power and the No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevy team taking five of those checkered flags as the winningest INDYCAR SERIES driver on the layout. However, it was the series' most recent winner, Scott McLaughlin, leading the way for the team in the morning practice session with the fourth-fastest lap in the No. 3 Odyssey Battery Chevrolet. Josef Newgarden - carrying a Snap-on livery on the No. 2 Chevrolet for the first time since the 2021 edition of this race - paced the Penske trio in the afternoon practice session. McLaughlin and Power slotted in just behind with all three scoring top-10 lap times.

Unfortunately, qualifying proved to be a battle for Team Penske as only Power advanced to the second round. He will start Saturday's race from the 12th position. Newgarden and McLaughlin both fought handling issues on their first-round qualifying laps and will start 13th and 16th, respectively.

What's Next - Race coverage of the GMR Grand Prix begins tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 pm ET on NBC, Peacock, Sirius XM Radio and INDYCAR Radio.
