Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey

Monterey, California

June 22, 2024

The teams of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES were greeted with warmer ambient and track temperatures on Saturday as they prepared for second practice and qualifications for the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Will Power and Scott McLaughlin both scored top-five times in the morning practice session with Josef Newgarden in 19th-place. With 27 cars on the 2.238-mile track, finding a clean lap proved to be a challenge late in the one-hour practice session.

When it came time to set the field for tomorrow's Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, times amongst the competitors remained extremely close as is the norm in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Neither Josef Newgarden nor Will Power advanced out of Round 1 and will start 14th and 15th respectively. Scott McLaughlin's Good Ranchers Chevrolet managed to make it to the Fast 12 and just narrowly missed making the Fast Six and will start seventh tomorrow.

Coverage of the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey begins Sunday, June 23 at 6:00 pm ET on USA.

THEY SAID IT: "I had a little slide through one of the quick corners in turn six around the back there. Just cost me going up the hill. When you lose that momentum going up the hill, it really hurts you. The Good Ranchers Chevy has been good. I think we could have easily made the Fast Six, but it's INDYCAR. There's a tenth (of a second) between seven cars. You just can't make a mistake, but ultimately, great starting spot for tomorrow and we'll see how we go."
