Hornish Starting 14th in Saturday's Bank of America 500

October 12, 2012

CONCORD, N.C. (October 11, 2012) – Shell-Pennzoil Dodge driver Sam Hornish Jr. will start Saturday’s Bank of America 500 from the 14th position.  Hornish earned the starting spot after clocking in with a lap of 28.174 seconds (191.666 mph) in Thursday’s qualifying session here at Charlotte Motor Speedway.  Hornish wanted more.

“I’m just mad at myself,” Hornish told Dodge SRT PR Representative Jimmy White.  “I don’t feel like I drove it hard enough.  But even from what it’s changed from practice to qualifying from the end of Nationwide practice, it’s picked up so much grip that I feel like I’ve babied it a little bit. I feel like we have a really good car in race trim and that was probably in the back of my head. I didn’t want to go to a backup car or anything like that (smiles). It’s not as good as I wanted to be for sure and thought we had a shot at being in the top-five but at the end of the day it’s not going to be that bad, probably 16th, 18th, somewhere in there, maybe a little bit better than that. I’m just happy to have the opportunity in the Shell-Pennzoil Dodge and I feel like we’ve got a really good race car and that’s what matters.”

Greg Biffle won the Coors Light Pole Award here tonight in record fashion.  Biffle’s lap of 27.877 seconds (193.708 mph) eclipsed the old record of 27.948 seconds (193.216 mph) set by Elliott Sadler here on Oct. 13, 2005.  Second-fastest qualifier Mark Martin (27.927 seconds/193.361 mph) and third-place Ryan Newman (27.943 seconds/193.251 mph) also bettered the old record.  Clint Bowyer (27.973 seconds/193.043 mph) and Jimmie Johnson (27.980 seconds/192.995 mph) rounded out today’s top-five qualifiers.

Martin Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne rounded out today’s top-10 drivers under the clock.  Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski will start the Miller Lite Dodge from the 20th spot after clocking in with a lap of 28.238 seconds (191.232 mph).

Friday’s schedule here at CMS calls for practice sessions from 3:00 p.m. till 3:55 p.m. and from 5:50 p.m. till 6:50 p.m. (on ESPN2).  Saturday’s Bank of America 500 (334 laps/501 miles) has a scheduled 7:30 p.m. ET starting time, with ABC-TV and PRN Radio providing live coverage of all the action.
