May 15, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 15, 2013) – Helio Castroneves continued to lead the way for Team Penske as it completed its fifth day of practice Wednesday for the 97th Indianapolis 500.
The three-time Indy 500 winner posted a fast lap of 223.699 mph in the No. 3 Shell V-Power Pennzoil Ultra Dallara/Chevrolet which was good for the third-fastest lap of the day overall. Castroneves has now finished second, fourth and third in the last three practice sessions.
"The Shell-Pennzoil car was good today,” said Castroneves, who has also led the Team Penske practice effort for three consecutive days. “It was interesting out on the track with the wind conditions. We will keep finding little things and making improvements."
AJ Allmendinger was clocked at 221.093 mph – 18th-best overall – in the No. 2 IZOD Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet.
"It was warmer outside today than it was yesterday which changed some of the things the IZOD crew put into the set-up of the IZOD Chevrolet,” said Allmendinger, who finished outside of the top-10 for the first time since practice began. “The track had less grip than the day before as well. I got to experience being in race traffic along with practicing pit stops which was a first for me. Overall, it was another solid day on the track. We continue to learn more and more as the week goes on."
Will Power was clocked at 220.719 mph in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet, 23rd-fastest of the six-hour session.
"We did a lot of race set-up work today - some long runs and the guys worked on pit stops too,” said Power, whose 95 laps were 43 more than he recorded yesterday and highest among the Team Penske trio on Wednesday. “It was a good day for the Verizon team. We accomplished a fair bit of work today. There is bit more in the car and I feel pretty good about it."
All three Team Penske drivers focused on race setups Wednesday, another busy day for the team. In addition to Power’s 95 laps, Castroneves completed 67 laps and Allmendinger 54.
On Saturday, the drivers will attempt to help Team Penske add to its record 17 Indy 500 pole positions. Practice resumes Thursday at noon ET.
Pole qualifying is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday. It will be televised live by NBC Sports Network.
The Indianapolis 500 is set to begin at noon on May 26 and it will be televised live on ABC.
