CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 15, 2009) - Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the Penske Racing No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger, will start the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway from the 22nd starting position on Saturday night.
Track activity was delayed several hours at the 1.5-mile oval due to inclement weather on Thursday. In an abbreviated evening practice session, Hornish ran a fast-lap time of 29.392 seconds at a speed of 189.367 miles per hour placing him in the ninth position overall.
The 8th competitor to make a qualifying attempt later Thursday night, Hornish posted a fast-lap time of 28.557 seconds at a speed of 189.095 miles per hour. The effort secured the 22nd starting position for the No. 77 team.
“Our Mobil 1 Dodge is pretty good. I just overdrove it on the first lap driving into Turn 1,” said Hornish. “I was excited because I had a good car in practice and tried to get the most out of it that I could. I feel like we have a good race car. We generally tend to run good here. We'll keep our heads up and try to dial it in tomorrow.”
Coverage of the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway will air live on the ABC television network on Saturday, October 17 beginning at 7 p.m. EDT and will also be broadcast live on PRN Radio at 6:15 p.m. EDT.
