Stremme Will Start Fifth For Sunday's Race at Watkins Glen

August 7, 2009

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (August 7, 2009) – David Stremme, driver of the No. 12 Penske Dodge Charger, secured the fifth starting position for the start of Sunday’s road course event at the 2.45 Watkins Glen International.

Stremme and the No.12 Penske Dodge crew had a 90-minute practice session on Friday afternoon to get the car dialed in for qualifying.  Stremme fought a loose race car for the most of the practice session, but the team worked diligently to tune on their machine.  At the end of practice, Stremme was sixth on the speed chart and was looking forward to qualifying.

During Friday afternoon’s qualifying session, Stremme posted a fast lap time of 71.810 seconds at a speed of 122.824 miles per hour placing the No. 12 team on the inside of the third row for the start of Sunday’s 220-mile event in upstate New York.  This is Stremme’s best qualifying effort of the 2009 campaign.

“That was a great lap for us,” commented David Stremme after his qualifying effort.  “We unloaded and were pretty good right off the truck.  We spent a bit of time in race trim getting a feel for what our car would be like during a long run.  We then made a qualifying run and felt like we had a car good enough to start up front.  I was a bit nervous going out to qualify.  There are so many things, as a driver, you have to do right in order to have a strong lap.  I got a little loose through the ‘S’ turns which cost us a little time.  I have never qualified a car at Watkins Glen, so I was not sure what to expect.  I am proud of [crew chief] Roy [McCauley] and all the guys on the No.12 Penske Dodge Charger team.  They work so hard every week preparing these cars.  We have worked really hard on our road course package and it obviously paid off today in qualifying.  I am looking forward to Sunday and getting a solid finish.”

The Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen will be seen live on Sunday, August 9 on the ESPN television network. Race coverage will begin at 1 p.m. ET. The event can also be heard live on MRN Radio as well as Sirius Satellite Radio, channel 128.
